I was teaching a painting class, and on the last day, a student brought in flowers as a thank you. I left them in the classroom for everyone to paint. At about 10 pm that night, I was at home and suddenly though that I wanted to do a woodcut of the flowers. I had never done a traditional still life before as a woodcut, and I liked how these flowers were already in different states of life (buds, full bloom, drooping, etc). I ran back to the classroom and drew this on the block as a still life. I've printed it a few ways, but I had always wanted to capture that midnight in the studio feel I had while drawing it.
