Storm King Woods
Storm King Woods
woodcut
8"x 16"
2012

When I started teaching at The Storm King School in the Hudson Valley, I took a few hikes through the Black Rock Forest which is across the street from the school. I'm always impressed at how beautiful yet impenetrable the forest is. I know that the standard landscape usually has a path that allows the viewer into to the image. To me, the "woods" is much more untamed, raw, and intense than seeing it with a man-made, bucolic path through it. It dares you to try and walk through it, to deal with it. It's the realm of coyotes, bears, fox, turkeys, and bugs. I just want to look at it.
