I was teaching a painting class, and on the last day, a student brought in a bouquet as thanks. I set it up in the class for everyone to paint. After class, at about 10 pm, I was suddenly inspired to do a woodcut of the flowers. I had never done a proper still life as a woodcut, and I thought that this would be perfect. It had all the elements for a good still life- each flower was at a different stage of life (bud, full bloom, withering), and all of the types of flowers had resonance - Hydrangeas, Lillys, Daiseys and Thistles.
