Storm King Woods, Painting
Storm King Woods, Painting
oil on board

This is an oil painting of a subject I have revisted many times. The Storm King State Park is in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. I have been there many times to hike and photograph the woods. The standard painting of a landscape usually has a road or path that leads you into the scene. I didn't want to include that because it suggests human activity, sort of a "conquering of the wilderness" as it were. I prefer to depict the forest as it's own thing- impenetrable, wild, awe inspiring, not easily understood, but accepted for what it is. An inspiration for this is the work of Charles Burchfield. He painted wild, almost surreal watercolors landscapes that try and capture the feel, sounds, and magic of the woods.
