Portfolio > Very Large woodcuts

This was part of my diploma project at the New York Academy of Art. It's an image of 1890's NYC gangsters hanging out under a bridge selling a baby. At the time, I was fascinated by images of "Old New York"- photos by Jacob Riis, Books by Luc Sante, and Herbert Asbury("Gangs of New York"). I mixed those images with a Dickensian, "Oliver Twist" scene.
It was fun to do a woodcut this large, but it almost cost me my thumb as I slipped while sharpening the woodcut tool- the ensuing tale of emergency room madness is a tale I'll tell you if you come to one of my woodcut workshops
