Porter in the Rubber Room
Porter Wagoner
woodcut
18" x 36"

Porter was one of the flashiest singing cowboys from, what I consider, the golden age of country music- From Hank Williams to Waylon Jennings. He wrote some great songs, was the MC for the opry, started Dolly's career, etc. He always tried to keep current. In the 60's he did some "psychedelic" tunes. Some would think they're novelty numbers, but for me real good country music always has a sense of humor and healthy amount of poking fun at itself. Te best example of that is his song "The Rubber Room", a psychedelic/psychotic humdinger. This woodcut is inspired by that sense of the absurd that Porter, knowingly or not, personified.
